Theme Title

Christ our Passover is sacrificed; we live as new dough.

Christ intercedes for us — the gospel’s assurance.

In baptism, we die and rise with Christ. (With Capernwray)

The suffering Christ comforts us in our afflictions.

Christ reigns over the living and the dead — we belong to Him.

Christ embodies humility. - A foot washing service: 7pm

The gospel is Christ crucified — God’s wisdom and power.

Christ is risen — the firstfruits of those who have died.

Presbyterians Read: Paul, His Letters and Anti-Judaism

The focus of this study is on Paul’s role in the history of anti-Judaism within the Christian church. This study, which can be used during Lent, provides historical background on how first-century followers of Jesus came to be called "Christians" and how Paul and his letters have been appropriated to support anti-Jewish views within the church.

The study will consist of two parts:

  • Two weeks studying John Gager’s book Who Made Early Christianity? The Jewish Lives of the Apostle Paul (available from Amazon or Kindle)

  • Two weeks studying Paul’s letters to the Galatians and the Romans.

The study aims to contextualize the emerging church within Judaism in the Roman Empire and to address the role of Paul’s writings in the history of anti-Judaism. We can examine our own conceptions of Paul’s letters to the Galatians and Romans, and how these writings can serve as an inspiration for inclusion rather than a treatise on Christian triumphalism.

The study guide is available to download or order.

Join the Discussion!

Join the study’s author, Dr. Lee Johnson, for online discussions on Wednesdays from Feb. 25 – March 18, 6:00 -7:00 p.m. (EST).

Facilitator Notes

If you’re gathering people together for discussion, here are some helpful hints:

  • Begin each session with prayer.

  • Agree to some basic group guidelines:

    • Encourage personal sharing: reflections, challenges, applications. Let’s not share stories that aren’t ours (i.e. “People are saying…”)

    • Anything said in the group stays in the group (confidentiality).

    • No Cross talk (talking while someone else is talking)

    • No “fixing” others

    • Leave time for others to share also

  • End with a commitment: one step each person will take this week.
